Very interesting information on game programmer's view on artificial intelligence.

What is artificial intelligence in video games?- In video games artificial intelligence is the ability for any character that is not controlled by the player to make smart choices. (Schwab 4). Playing video games requires a challenge. If a challenge is not present then the game loses its fun factor quickly, resulting in a sub par game experience. For example, if you’re playing tic-tac-toe with a friend, and they randomly pick a spot on the board every time, chances are you will win. This may be entertaining or fun at first, but eventually it will be very boring, very fast. Why, because it is too easy to win. Now let’s say that your friend now makes smart decisions, based off the ones that you make and based off of tic-tac-toe techniques. This makes a much more challenging and fun experience. The chance of failure makes the event of success feel even better. This example of random vs. intelligent can be applied to games as well. Based on your position, state, and strategy in a game, the AI (artificial intelligence) will make smart choices (Schwab). Artificial intelligence provides a challenge for gamers makings success harder to obtain, and sweeter to enjoy.
